DIRECTED BY MATEUSZ CEJNÓG
FILM PROJECT “AWARENESS”
A short feature film.
AWARENESS is a short feature film. Genre Thriller / drama. Mateusz Cejnóg is the director and screenwriter (Internationally Awarded ‘EFEKT‘ from 2018). The main roles will be played by Żaneta Homa (including “Colors of Happiness”, “In the rhythm of the heart”) and Kacper Pilch (including “Colors of Happiness”, “Memento Mori”). Below are still photos from the set as well as information about the created film.
The film tells the story of a young girl, Klara (Żaneta Homa). Her brother has recently disappeared, and she is facing a recent ailment related to memory loss. At the beginning of the film, we learn that doctors are unable to help her and have no idea where this phenomenon comes from. One day, a stranger appears at her doorstep (Kacper Pilch). The man claims that he knows where these failures come from. The mystery is becoming clearer, and every day Klara’s story is becoming more dramatic and full of madness.
On April 11-14, 2019, we met on the set, where we worked intensively on the recording sphere. Many of us met only on day 1. Despite this, we already knew that we were a perfectly selected team. Jokes went left and right. Even then we were afraid of what would be the last day, since the first day was so funny. We recorded in two different locations. Plus, we tried on one that eventually dropped out. The whole recording took us about 12 hours. That was a good day! Day two? Over 20 hours. Some couldn’t make it here. Nothing unusual. After the previous day it was hard to sleep. On the second day we got up at about 5-6 in the morning. We recorded until about 3 am. What’s funny, it was only one location – the kitchen and the next room.
However, it was not as easy as it may seem at first glance. We recorded three separate days in this location (according to the plot). Which meant that before the start of each subsequent scene, we had a lot of fun both in terms of scenery, as well as makeup, which, moreover, was changed to a completely different unless 5-6 times (Svitlana Horodetska) and lighting (Patryk Dróżdż – also the photo director as well as the main operator) who created the perfect atmosphere for each of the scenes. You may ask – how much can it change in three days? Well, it’s true that usually not many. The plot of the film, however, revolves around these three days. This is not an easy moment for the heroine of the film. The girl is changing, and with her the whole environment. We don’t want to reveal the details, but you will definitely see what we mean by watching the movie. What can I say, the day was really exhausting. And as with his beginning, the laughter was all-powerful. So with its end, it was less and less.
On the third day, fortunately, we had a moment to get some sleep and regain some of our strength. This time three locations were waiting for us. A bathroom, a cemetery and a dark basement were waiting for us. Interestingly, commuting and moving equipment alone should take a really long time. After the second day, however, no one apparently wanted a repeat and everything went very neatly. Either way, we spent about 12 hours on the set. But I promise you it was still fun and fun! We started day 4 early. We had some plans for a certain location in Wroclaw. It turned out great. But it required some sacrifice. Mainly from Żaneta and Kacper who probably ran the entire Grunwald Bridge 20-30 times. But also Maciek Ławniczak, a camera operator, who both with the gimbal and ATTENTION INTERESTED with his hoverboard (something alike riding a board on wheels) rode very fast at the pace of the characters’ run. Once he even drove on a street where there were few cars. It was a risk. But it’s worth how good these shots look. Anyway, Maciek is a master in this kind of matters. We finished the last day with a stage in Ostrów Tumski, also in Wrocław.
The last day
The last slap on the set was definitely a joy for everyone present. But also sadness. Our relationships on the set have become very friendly. It was very brisk, cheerful, and I wouldn’t say much that family. We all liked each other very much. So some even admitted that they finally let go of the tear. This is not surprising. It was just great.
Of course, this is not the end of work on the film. While the stage of pre-production, in which Director Mateusz Cejnóg, among others, wrote the script (with this there was also an interesting story. But this is the moment), when he gathered the whole crew and with some of them thought over every detail of the production. And as far as the photos, when we all met on the set, came to an end – it’s time for the last part – post-production.
The origin of the idea
First, however, we will return to the genesis of this project. Where did the idea for “AWARENESS” come from? The first version of the script, very different from what we finally witness in the film, was already written in 2017. And what is interesting – not by its current director, but by a close friend of the director, Daniel Tulicki (who, moreover, was present on the set as an assistant director he was the deputy operator and sound engineer). Daniel then created his story in his own style. He asked Mateusz to read and evaluate his work. Ultimately, it turned out that Mateusz rewrote this scenario, basically the other half was thrown out and written from scratch – moreover, completely changed both in terms of dialogue and stylistics, but also in plot. There was nothing of the original there. The first half, however, was quite good, it required a lot of corrections and a large number of editions, but some things remained. Several texts were even untouched. In Daniel’s version, the main character was Paweł, a young boy. That is why the version of this version written by Mateusz also had a male protagonist. The director of this script was … Note Daniel Tulicki. On the Facebook page of Immortal Memories you can even find information about such a production created by a guy. The film has reached the production phase. Several scenes were also filmed there. (As a relish we will throw fragments into making off of the current version). Due to the team, which unfortunately did not quite feel and understood, a difficult scenario, in fact, Daniel was forced to suspend the project. After two years, he abandoned him, and the script was taken over by Mateusz and became the director of the film. Thanks to the professional actors and the rest of the crew that the current director brought to the set, we managed to get the effect that was meant from the very beginning.
What definitely distinguishes our film? That it is made by professionals but also enthusiasts. What can we certify? That no person earns a penny from this movie. Not only that, we didn’t even take any funding for this film. Some of them traveled all over Poland just to be on the set. Our team are real artists. Blood and bone enthusiasts.
